Direct Selling and the Gen Z Workforce: A New Model for Opportunity
Gen Z and millennials are increasingly gravitating towards the gig economy, representing a cultural shift away from traditional jobs of previous generations. According to ZipRecruiter’s 2026 Graduate Report, nearly 38% of recent grads are considering starting their own business, 32.5% are looking at gig work, and 28% are exploring freelance work.
Income is a key driver of this change. Gen Zs understand how diverse income sources can allow them to remain financially resilient to macroeconomic shifts, particularly in the current climate. But that is only part of the picture. According to a survey by Intuit, 49% of Gen Z said that the primary motivation behind pursuing these opportunities was to gain more independence and control over their work. 42% also cite a desire to follow their passions as a major driver. Flexibility, autonomy, and alignment with personal values are essential components of how Gen Zs decide how they choose to build their careers.
That’s where direct selling comes in. “Direct selling is very appealing to millennials and Gen Z because these generations value multiple income sources and alternatives to traditional 9-5 jobs,” said Heather Chastain, Bridgehead Collective Founder and CEO. “Younger generations are also very interested in monetizing their personal brand, and we see examples of that on our social feeds all the time. Direct selling provides them the infrastructure to do just that while earning additional income.”
For the side-hustle generation, direct selling doesn’t require prior business experience but rather meets people where they are. It allows them to leverage and sharpen existing skills, like their social media acumen, to start their own venture.

As the number one direct selling business in the world, Amway has undergone a digital transformation, empowering Independent Business Owners (IBOs) through technology. To support new and existing IBOs, Amway offers immediate access to the best-in-class tools and technology to build their business, while becoming knowledgeable about products and solutions for their customers. This includes free access to Amway Education, a collection of over 150 training courses in five languages covering selling strategies, company rules, business tips and leadership skills. They also get their own personal retail website on Amway.com. With access to the latest in ecommerce technology, Amway IBOs have the ability to manage their business and serve their customers from anywhere.
In a hyper-connected digital environment, Amway’s community-centered approach to starting a business and built-in support system of business owners also aligns with the generation that is looking to build trust before it builds transactions. Amway offers its IBOs a global community of business owners who offer guidance and mentorship based on their own experiences with building a customer base.
In a world shaped by automation, and rapid technological change, many Gen Zs believe that relying on a single employer can be risky. The appeal of direct selling isn’t that it replaces that risk, but that it gives you options to supplement your income while pursuing your passions.
For a generation already comfortable building a business with nothing but a smartphone, Amway, and direct selling in general, provides a low-risk entry point that has made independent business ownership more attainable than ever.
